Meet Girl Boss: @the_unrefined

graphics1Meet Brisbane based Girl Boss: Nicola, aka ‘@the_unrefined’. Since our photoshoot with her at our Mura Boutique Indooroopilly Store, we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know this beauty a little better. She embodies all things health and fitness and has inspired us to live a more nourished and healthy lifestyle. We felt so empowered by her story that we couldn’t keep her a secret, we had to share her with our Mura Girls!

Between Nicola’s busy sched we managed to catch her for a quick Q&A.

Q1. Describe yourself in three words…
Determined, humorous (I love a good joke) and adaptable.

Q2. Tell us more about The Unrefined and where it all began…graphics3The Unrefined came about after going “unrefined” (cutting out unrefined foods) for one month and truly noticing a difference in my mood, skin and energy levels. I was mostly impressed with the difference in my skin (my acne remarkably improved) so decided to start posting about the lifestyle change. I would post about food, recipes before and after photos and my favourite skin care. After a few months, the Instagram account started to grow and out of the blue, a cafe in Brisbane contacted The Unrefined asking for us to develop a “healthy” granola recipe to appear on their menu as “The Unrefined Granola”. That recipe ended up becoming The Unrefined’s first product! Today, The Unrefined has a manufacturer and goes through hundreds of kgs of granola per month. The company has also launched a jewellery line, eBooks and is looking to further expand in the fields of health & fashion.

Q3. Are you working on any projects at the moment?
I am working on two exciting projects which I am very passionate about – one of which is a platform dedicated to acne and hormones! The second project is still in the planning phase but excites me and I can’t wait to announce it.

Q4. What does a healthy lifestyle and mindset look like to you?
Daily self-love and self-belief. I think we are often our own worst enemy and we don’t realise that we need to be our own best friend. At the moment i’m all about remaining in tune with my state (physical and mental). If I wake up on the wrong side of the bed I know I need to change my physical state to ensure my mindset is positive for the rest of the day. A healthy lifestyle to me means eating well (includes treats), drinking water, exercising, meditating and being grateful.

Q5. What are your top three health & fitness tips that everyone should add into their routine?graphics2Morning Meditation (I don’t do guided. I put on music (Enja) and spend 2/3 minutes running through the things i’m grateful for, and two minutes visualising what I want for my future). This sets me up for the day and is the BEST habit.

Morning Exercise – I’m lucky to have a sister to motivate me. We go to the gym and do weights/cardio at least 3 times per week (first thing in the morning while it’s dark). This really sets you up for the day and ensures you’re not dreading the gym all day!

Water – When I don’t drink water, my skin looks like a prune and I just don’t feel like I have my S&*T together. I drink magnesium water and also warm water and lemon juice/ginger every morning!

Q6. You started a business at such a young age! Do you have any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Tony Robbins! He has helped me through the highs and lows of business and I aspire to have his consistent mindset.

Q7. What gives you the most self confidence?
Gel on my brows. But seriously… ticking off my list of things to do. It sounds weird but the more I tick off, the more capable and confident I feel about my day.

Q8. How do you stay motivated to achieve your goals when you’re not feeling 100%?Honestly… If I’m having a really negative day; I blast music (think upbeat club music) and jump around until I remember it isn’t the end of the world. You feel stupid doing it but it honestly motivates me to get back to work and start achieving.

Q9. What is a health & fitness myth that you want to bust?graphics4Weights make you bulky. Honestly, for the past year I have been doing weights every week and I am the strongest (and leanest) I’ve ever been! I look forward to the challenge every day and think doing weights is a must for all women.

Q10. What message do you wish to share with other women?graphics5.jpg

Thanks for reading Mura beauties! Stay tuned for next weeks blog…
