DIY Spicy hot chocolate


We teamed up with our favourite food blogger @shelleysgoodeats to bring you a winter warming DIY that will make your mouth drool at the thought of it!

So snug up & get the winter tunes going, because this DIY spicy hot chocolate is made for late nights by the fire.


2 cups coconut milk*
1/3 cup cacao
1 star anise
1 stick cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp ground cardamom
¼ tsp. cayenne pepper
Pinch sea salt
1/3 cup maple syrup
¼ cup espresso coffee (optional)



In a small saucepan whisk the cacao into the milk. Turn heat on low, and continue to whisk. When no lumps remain, whisk in the maple syrup and remaining spices (star anise, cinnamon stick, nutmeg, cardamom, cayenne pepper, salt). Bring the milk mixture up to the boil and then allow to simmer for 5 mins to let all the spices infuse into the milk. For an extra boost add in 2 shots of espresso coffee, or omit for a warming post dinner hot chocolate! Whisk the mixture for 2mins to aerate. Finally pour into two mugs, dust with cacao and enjoy. * Coconut milk is rich in health fats so provides a delicious creamy texture, but any milk can be substituted here.


Pour 2 cups milk into a small saucepan.


Add in 1/3 Cacao and whisk until lumps are removed


Space heat on low, and then add in all remaining spices and maple syrup


Whisk mixture until well combined and then bring mixture to the boil, then reduce to a simmer.


Once mixture has simmered for about 5 mins, add coffee shots into mixture if desired.


Whisk for 2mins until small bubbles form at the surface


Pour into mugs and enjoy!
